Social, Ethical, Legal and Human Issues

How does technology use contribute to social and equity issues in schools?
The main issue among technology and equity in schools is the availability of technology to all students. Not all students' and their families have access to computers or essential software for activities outside of the classroom due to poor financial situations. Another concern is that technology can cause issues in the area of equalilty based on gender. Due to research that shows males are more motivated by and dominate in technology use, it may be bias to focus classroom activites aroung technology.
The truth is, we have a "technologically oriented economy" and the more experience students gain with technology the better jobs they will obtain when they leave school and enter the 'real' world. It is important to consider the type of technology being implemented in the classroom and make sure it fits into the guidelines of being socially and equally acceptable.

  1. I didn't know that fact about males being more motivated to use technology, that's interesting. You're right, this is a "technology oriented economy" and the more we encourage students to use technology in the classroom the better.

  2. Hi G...
I agree that if we do not teach our children/students technology they will lag in the job force. We should also teach our children to respect the internet - they should be taught not to go into wrong/harmful sites. We teach our children not to talk to strangers - we should remember to teach them that they should not give out too much information about themselves in the internet.

  3. It can be difficult to implement technology when not all students have the same resources available. Some students may not have computers at home, which can create a problem if an assignment requires the use of a computer. It is important that we think about these issues when using technology in our classrooms. The good thing about using these resources in the classroom, though, is that all students have access to them while in the school.
