Games and Virtual Environments

What are the benefits of using games in the classroom?

Students are immersed in all types of technology outside of the classroom; including hand-held games, computers, ipods, ipads, cell phones and much more. Why not match the student experience in the classroom in an educational way? Games can be used with educational content if educators and game developers apply the content based on standards and curriculum. It can be an excellent way to teach students how to use games appropriately instead of students going home and participating in extremely violent, inappropriate games. Computer-based games are not just for fun, they can be educational and helpful in the learning process. It is important for educators and game developers to become aware of the demand for more educational games and perhaps games can become part of new way to deliver content in the classroom.

  1. Games also motivate students and make them excited to learn...even though sometimes they don't realize they are learning. Kids today are immersed in a world of technology. Most kids growing up in this generation will not know a world without computer games, video games, and cell phones. I think integrating games into the classroom will make a more fun and productive classroom experience for many students.

  2. I think you make some really good points! Children seem to love playing games on their little handheld Nintendo DS and on other game systems so it would be great to allow them to have a good time, while learning something by playing educational games.

  3. Great point that educational games provide students with an opportunity to play a game that does not contain violence. I think that is a good way to show students that gaming can be used for educational purposes not just for entertainment. However, even educational games can be entertaining so they are wonderful motivators for students.
